Abstract
Closing volumes (closing volume and its ratio to vital capacity) were studied in 67 smokers and 51 nonsmokers. All the subjects studied. were in the third decade of age and had negative chest roentgenograms and were free of respiratory symptoms. Closing volumes were significantly larger in smokers than in nonsmokers although there was no close correlation between closing volumes and daily cigarette consumption. However, the longer the duration or the greater pack years of smoking, the larger the closing volumes. This was in contrast to our previous study relating to ventilatory dynamics which showed no significant correlation with duration or pack years of smoking. These facts suggest that dysfunction or obstruction of small airways is present even in apparently healthy young smokers, and determination of closing volumes are more sensitive for the early diagnosis and for the evaluation of the severity of the disorder.
